Particle Characterization
Greetings from your friends at HORIBA Instruments!
Our latest newsletter invites you to attend two webinars - the first on data interpretation and the second on faster surface area measurement and to download the new application note about monitoring size reduction by microfluidizer processes. Also, we invite those of you in the area to attend our Rocky Mountain seminars.
You'll also find information about our "Lunch and Learn" program, which national events we'll be at in May and where the next LA-950 training course will be held. You'll also be able to learn a bit about HORIBA's Medical segment.
Training Series Webinar: Understanding and Interpreting Particle Size Analysis Results
Have you ever looked at the data from your particle size analyzer and wondered what it's really telling you? Then mark your calendar to join us on Thursday, May 13th at 1 PM Eastern (10 AM Pacific) for a webinar on decoding your PSA results.
Topics covered include:
- Acronyms, labels, and terms
- How your analyzer calculates the data
- The perils of choosing the wrong statistics
- Finding insights in graphs and tables
Register to attend the presentation and finally discover what a "D50" really means!
Technology Series Webinar: The SA-9600 Series of Surface Area Analyzers (and new software!)
Please join us for a webinar about the SA-9600 surface area analyzers and the technology that powers them on Tuesday, May 25th at 1 PM Eastern (10 AM Pacific). HORIBA is proud to re-introduce the SA-9600 surface area analyzers that have become renowned around the world for their unmatched speed and ease of use. We've taken the BET flowing-gas technique and joined it with brand-new HORIBA-designed software.
Topics covered include:
- BET technique
- Instrument design
- Measurement workflow
- NEW! Computer-controlled software
Register to attend the presentation and learn more about the faster alternative to static volumetric techniques.
Material Characterization and Particle Size Analysis Seminars in the Rocky Mountain Region
There will be a Material Characterization seminar offered in Salt Lake City, Utah on Tuesday, May 18 and Westminster (Denver), Colorado on Thursday, May 20. The innovative presentations will highlight the theory and application of particle size, nano technology, method development and process control.
Both seminars will begin at 9:00 on both days. There is no fee, only an investment of your time. If you'll be in the area, please let us know to expect you.
Application Note: Particle Size Reduction using Microfluidizers
Many particle size measurements are made to track size reduction operations such as milling, mixing, homogenizing, microfluidizing, etc.
The HORIBA laser diffraction analyzers are uniquely capable of measuring from several millimeters down to the nanometer scale, making it the instrument of choice for many size reduction operations. Since microfluidizers are capable of reducing particle size down to the nanoparticle scales (<100nm), HORIBA laser diffraction analyzers have long been the system of choice for monitoring their performance.

Lunch and Learn with your group
Here's your chance to bring a popular HORIBA "Lunch and Learn" seminar to your company. Every "Lunch and Learn" is designed to bring you valuable technical content in a format that is fun, convenient, and informative.
An expert from the HORIBA Particle Size Analysis team will present a one hour talk during your lunch break while you enjoy lunch on us. We'll bring the food (typically sandwiches or pizza), refreshments and technical presentation. All you need to do is host the event in a conference room and invite any interested colleagues.
The topics offered in the seminar series include:
- A Structured Approach to Particle Size Method Development
- Size Analysis of Nanoparticles
- Getting the Most From Your Laser Diffraction Particle Size Analyzer
- Characterization of Geological Samples and Sediment
- Particle Characterization in the Pharmaceutical Industry
If you can think of a topic that's not on that list, let us know and we'll build a presentation just for you.
Here is where HORIBA will be in May
Please visit us at the following events:
PTXi 2010
May 4-6
Donald E. Stephens Convention Center
Rosemont, Illinois
NY Society of Cosmetic Chemists Suppliers' Day
May 11-12
New Jersey Convention and Exposition Center
Edison, New Jersey
Particles 2010
May 22-25
Regal Sun Resort
Lake Buena Vista, Florida
Our own Mark Bumiller will be speaking at Session B1 (Sunday, 0945) on Image Analysis as a Tool for Particle Characterization in the Pharmaceutical Industry.
Upcoming Customer Training Courses
The next laser diffraction user training course will be held in Edison, NJ on June 8 & 9. This popular "Boot Camp" will cover particle size basics, diffraction theory, the importance of refractive index selection, system verification, and full method development. The agenda mixes classroom time with hands-on instrument use to solidify concepts.
There will be ample time to ask questions of HORIBA's particle size experts. Sign up quickly because registration is limited to ten attendees.
