Particle Characterization
Greetings from your friends at HORIBA Instruments!
Our February newsletter includes invitations to visit us at Pittcon, visit our new web pages on abrasives and cement, download new application notes, and attend our next diffraction training course. In addition we include a photo from the celebration of our 55th anniversary as a company in Kyoto, Japan.
Visit HORIBA at Pittcon
Please visit us at booth 2221 at Pittcon in New Orleans, LA March 3-6. We will have all of our particle size analysis systems on display including the LA-950 laser diffraction analyzer, the LB-550 dynamic light scattering system, the DT-1200 particle size and zeta potential analyzer, the Camsizer digital image analyzer, and the NEW PSA300 image analyzer. Anyone interested in particle characterization will find new technologies to measure the size, shape and charge of their particulate based products in the HORIBA booth.
Lunch and Learn at Pittcon
Stop by the HORIBA booth (#2221) and pick up one of a limited number of free Lunch and Learn tickets. These tickets provide lunch and a short presentation on new technologies within the convention center complex at 12 noon. Here is the schedule for our Lunch and Learn events:
Monday: How to Select a Particle Size Analyzer
Tuesday: Particle Characterization Techniques in the Pharmaceutical Industry
Wednesday: New Imaging Techniques: Dynamic and Static Image Analysis for Particle Characterization
Visit the particle characterization area in the HORIBA booth to reserve a spot at any of these Lunch and Learn events.
Particle Characterization of Cement
Measuring and controlling the particle size distribution of cement is important both in order to achieve the desired product performance and to control manufacturing costs. Historic techniques of sieve and air permeability are still in use, but laser diffraction is becoming a more popular method to determine the particle size distribution of cement. The laser diffraction technique is quick, easy, reproducible, and provides a complete picture of the full size distribution.
Application note on analyzing cement using laser diffraction (You need to be logged in) or our new cement page.
NIST recently published a technical note “Acoustic Sensing of Hydrating Cement Suspensions: An Exploratory Study” by Vince Hackley, Lin-Sien Lum, and Chiara Ferraris. In this study a type I/II ordinary Portland cement was studied while undergoing the initial 3 stages of hydration using the DT-1200 acoustic spectrometer.
Seminar in La Jolla, California
HORIBA Instruments and Microfluidics are hosting a free seminar on Thursday March 20 at the Hyatt Regency in La Jolla, CA. on Thursday March 20. Topics covered include particle characterization and processing in the pharmaceutical industry from both the vendor and end user perspective.
Diffraction Training Course
Our next training course for laser diffraction customers will be held Tuesday and Wednesday March 18-19 in Irvine, CA. These courses are intended for existing LA-300, LA-910, LA-920, LA-930, and LA-950 customers. This two day course provides a balance of lectures and hands-on experience with the instruments. Space is limited so please register now if you are interested in attending the course.
HORIBA Celebrates 55th Anniversary
HORIBA celebrated our 55th anniversary on January 26 at the Kyoto International Conference Hall. The event was attended by over 2,200 employees who heard key note speeches by both Dr. and Mr. Horiba discussing a look back at our history and forward to our next goals.
