HORIBA Wins 2012 SAE World Congress Tech Award

HORIBA’s innovative emission measurement technology based on quantum cascade laser spectroscopy awarded by editors of AEI

Ann Arbor, Michigan, May 4, 2012 – HORIBA received a 2012 SAE World Congress Tech award for its MEXA-1400QL-NX emission measurement system during the SAE World Congress 2012 in Detroit, Michigan. HORIBA’s MEXA-1400QL-NX analyser, which is based on quantum cascade laser (QCL) technology, significantly improves the measurement accuracy of nitrogen exhaust gas components even at low concentrations. The winners had been selected from all SAE World Congress exhibitors and were judged by Automotive Engineering International (AEI) editors to be the most important technologies on display at this year’s show. Recognized around the world, the SAE World Congress Tech Awards identify and honour innovations the jury feels will drive significant advancements in the automotive industry of tomorrow.

The HORIBA QCL measurement system on display at this year’s SAE Congress event allows for the real-time simultaneous measurement of four nitrogen components in motor exhaust gas (NO, NO2, NH3, N2O). Thanks to the combination of a high intensity, high resolution light source and a sophisticated interference correction method, the MEXA-1400QL-NX is virtually free from interference from coexisting gases. The speed of NH3 measurement has also significantly increased.

The system is effective for certification or reporting U.S. EPA-regulated greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions as part of CFR 1065 regulations. It is applicable for R&D-related testing as well as for direct NH3 measurement from heavy-duty engines or direct N2O measurement from heavy-duty or non-road engines according to the Euro VI regulations.
