Particle Characterization
Greetings from your friends at HORIBA Instruments!
Our October newsletter welcomes you to visit our new web pages and download the application notes on Pharmaceutical Aerosols and Nutraceuticals, visit our booth at AAPS in Atlanta and attend the laser diffraction training class in Edison, NJ.
Pharmaceutical Aerosols
Pharmaceutical aerosols, including metered-dose inhalers (MDIs) and dry powder inhalers (DPIs) are devices that deliver a specific quantity of drug to the lungs. The particle size distribution and shape of the delivered dose is more critical for inhalation aerosols than for most other conventional drug products because these factors greatly influence the deposition profile in the lungs of the patient.

Nutraceuticals
Nutraceuticals are food extracts that have been demonstrated to produce a physiological benefit or provide some protection against chronic disease. As the name implies, nutraceuticals are the intersection of nutrition and pharmaceutical and is an umbrella term that can also include functional foods and dietary supplements. In the same way that the particle size and shape distributions of active pharmaceutical ingredients and drug delivery systems effect their solubility and bioavailability, so is particle characterization critical to nutraceuticals. Laser diffraction particle size analyzers offer the same benefits in speed, precision, and reliability to nutraceutical materials that have made the technique popular in the pharmaceutical industry.

Visit HORIBA at AAPS
HORIBA will be exhibiting our particle characterization products at the AAPS meeting in Atlanta, GA on November 17-19. Please stop by to visit us at booth #1549. Also make sure to attend the roundtable session on Monday afternoon from 2-4 PM on "Particle Size Analysis and Specification of Pharmaceutical Powders" that includes a presentation by Mark Bumiller, Vice President of Particle Products at HORIBA. Mark will discuss the use of image analysis with pharmaceutical powders.
Upcoming Customer Training Courses
The HORIBA particle size analysis group has been steadily expanding our offering of customer training courses. The next laser diffraction training course will be held in Edison, NJ on November 5-6.
