Depth Profile Analysis of Li batteries by RF GDOES

RF Glow Discharge has been successfully applied for the depth profile of both positive and negative electrodes of Li ion batteries. HORIBA Jobin Yvon has more than 15 references world wide in this field.

Glow Discharge Optical Emission Spectrometry relies on the controlled erosion of representative part of a material (2 or 4mm) by a high density (1014/cm3) and low energy RF plasma and provides the elemental distribution as a function of the penetration depth.

The capability to simultaneously measure all elements of interest (Li, Co, Mn, H, F, C, Al etc and the speed of analysis (less than 10 minutes are typically needed to profile a full electrode and reach the substrates) allow for quick control of composition changes as a function of the State of Charge.

Successful strategies of sample handling were developed by HORIBA Jobin Yvon to correctly analyse the electrodes including, for the flammable ones, a transfer chamber: the “Li bell”.
