Functional Thin Film Coatings

A wide range of functional properties can be manipulated by applying a coating to the surface of a material The physical, chemical, electrical, electronic, magnetic, mechanical, wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant properties may all be modified by a suitable coating.

Examples of materials where these effects are utilised include:

  • Optical coatings: Anti reflective, self-cleaning, electrochromic, mirrors, filters
  • Protective, aesthetic, decorative coatings: Al2O3, SiO2, polymers, oil…

Spectroscopic ellipsometers are ideal tools for these applications as the technique is non destructive and very accurate. The important properties are thicknesses, optical constants (n,k), transmittance (T) and reflectance (R) of the sample.

Spectroscopic ellipsometers can be easily integrated into roll-to-roll systems for in-line quality control of thin film coatings.
