Fluorescence probes are available in a wide variety of colors, shapes, sizes, and targeted applications. The use of molecular fluorescence to report on the properties of materials both biological and man-made has a long history, and novel probes are being developed all the time. The characterization of such novel molecules and particles can be quite difficult and time consuming if not done properly.

We present the Duetta, a 2-in-1 absorbance and fluorescence spectrometer for various ways to characterize novel fluorescence probes. This includes absorbance and fluorescence spectral detection for the characterization of novel molecules in relation to temperature, concentration, pH, solvent, and viscosity, among other physical parameters. With standard NIR detection using a CCD that measures out to 1100 nm, the Duetta is also applicable for NIR emitting probes as well. For novel materials with unknown spectroscopic parameters, the fast scanning CCD allows for fingerprinting the excitation emission matrix fingerprint for fast analysis and discovery.
