Sieving without Sieves


Sieving to determine particle size distribution has a long history. Initial implementation of the method is relatively inexpensive. Results, which indicate the fraction of particles that fit through a particular opening, are considered easy to interpret. However, since the analyzed particles directly contact the sieve, sieve sizes change with increasing use. Furthermore, the task of cleaning sieves increases labor costs. Finally, sieving results are sensitive to a number of issues beyond wearing of the sieves. Modern dynamic image analysis as implemented in the CAMSIZER can be used to overcome these problems and provide faster and more reliable results that can be correlated to historical sieve results. As an added bonus, particle shape information is also obtained.
