This webinar covers the necessity of ammonia measurement and the different measurement possibilities for mobility applications.
Ammonia is an acidic and toxic gas. While in rural areas, most of NH3 emissions result from agriculture, emissions from internal combustion vehicles have a significant impact in urban areas. Together, with other pollutants like sulfur dioxide or nitrous dioxide, they form secondary aerosols, which cause respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. To reduce the automotive NH3 emissions, limits for trucks and buses were introduced in the EURO VI standard and under special conditions for non-road mobile machinery vehicles in the STAGE V standard.
However, NH3 measurements in automotive applications are rather challenging. NH3 is a polar and highly reactive molecule, which leads to various side reactions and hanging effects in the heated line and particle filter. Cold spots and sampling temperature affect the concentration results. Additionally, the detection of ammonia in the exhaust has some drawbacks, for instance strong interferences from other exhaust gas components like water and carbon dioxide, which might affect the accuracy and the detection limit.
In this webinar, an overview of NH3 measurement technologies in automotive applications will be given. Various aspects for sample handling like surface material, temperature influence and possible side reactions will be discussed. Finally, different methods for Ammonia measurements will be described and compared.
