White Blood Cells (WBCs) also called Leukocytes are the major component of the body’s immune system that are involved in protecting the body against both infectious disease and foreign invaders.
The WBCs have nuclei and can be classified in standard ways. Two pairs of broadest categories classify them either by structure (granulocytes or agranulocytes) or by cell division lineage (myeloid cells or lymphoid cells). These broadest categories can be further divided into the five main types: neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils, lymphocytes, and monocytes.
White Blood Cells parameters are assessed by a CBC test and include:
- WBC total count (WBC # %)
- WBC Differential count :
- 3 Diff count for Lymphocytes, Monocytes and Granulocytes (# %)
- 5 Diff count for Lymphocytes, Monocytes, Neutrophils, Eosinophils and Basophils (# %)
- 8 Diff count for 5 Diff+ Immature Granulocytes, Monocytes, Lymphocytes (# %).
