In 2016 the European Commission´s (EC) Member States agreed on new procedures and requirements for light-duty vehicle type approval certification introducing Portable Emission Measurement System (PEMS) for vehicle testing on the road. RDE (Real Driving Emission) testing, both in research and development and for certification purposes, provides more realistic testing results by taking into account a variety of external factors. These factors include for example different road grades, varying driving behavior and ambient conditions. Combined with in-laboratory testing, RDE tests on the road enable manufacturers to optimize the emission output of their vehicles.
