From Macro to Micro: Raman and X-Ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy for Forensic Applications

Tuesday, June 13,  2023 at 2:00 PM EDT / 11:00 AM PDT

OVERVIEW:

Raman and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy are useful for â€‹identifying  and characterizing materials. Raman spectroscopy provides molecular information, X-ray fluorescence provides an elemental composition, and these two techniques provide complementary information to characterize an unknown sample. Both methods are non-destructive, require little to no sample preparation, and can be used in a macroscopic or microscopic configuration depending on the information one would like to obtain. The valuable information obtained and the flexibility of these two techniques make them ideal for use in forensic applications.

In this webinar, we will:

  • Present and discuss the basic principles of Raman and X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy.
  • Show examples of macroscopic and microscopic Raman and X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy for various applications in forensic science, including the identification and characterization of pharmaceutical products, paint pigments and gemstones.

What you will learn:

  • Overview of Raman and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy
  • How both macroscopic and microscopic Raman and XRF spectroscopy can be used in tandem for various forensics applications.

Who should attend?

  • Researchers working in the field of forensics sciences, counterfeit drugs and pharmaceuticals, gemology, archeology, and more.
  • Researchers interested in learning more about the capabilities of Raman and XRF spectroscopy for chemical and elemental analyses of various samples.
