ADS EVO User Interview

Towards Achieving Efficiency in EV Testing

Henry Chou (Engineer), Chris Yao ( Engineer), Chien-Te Lee (Manager from Environment & Energy Issue Department), Chia-Liang Chen (Chief from Environment & Energy Issue Department), from the Automotive Research & Testing Center (ARTC)

The Automotive Research & Testing Center (ARTC) in Taiwan utilize their testing facilities to provide internationally reliable vehicle and component testing and validation services, focus on advancing automotive technology and enhancing product quality. This article is based on an interview with them.

Challenges of Human Driving in EV Testing and Contributions of ADS EVO

- First, we asked Mr. Chien-te Lee, the manager, and Mr. Chia-Liang Chen, the chief from Environment & Energy Issue Department, about the challenges with human driving in EV testing.

Mr. Chien-Te Lee: As electric vehicles, including BEVs and PHEVs, enter the Taiwanese market, we are experiencing a significant rise in testing demand. However, these vehicles require longer testing periods compared to traditional cars, and managing test driver assignments has became a major challenge.

Mr. Chia-Liang Chen: Nowadays, some EV tests can last over 20 hours. This extended testing time causes driver exhaustion and raises the risk of test failures. These challenges were putting a lot of pressure on the operators and drivers, making it difficutl to complete the tests effectively.

Mr. Chien-Te Lee: While exploring new equipment to tackle these challenges, we were thrilled to discover the ADS EVO from HORIBA.

Mr. Chia-Liang Chen: By introducing ADS EVO to run long-duration tests with high accuracy, our test success rate has significantly improved. Drivers have also commented that with the introduction of the ADS EVO, they no longer need sit in the driver's seat for long periods and constantly monitor driver aids, freeing them from seemingly endless tests.

Impressions of actual use of ADS EVO

This scene is a demonstration test, not a development test, of this vehicle.

- We then asked Mr. Chris Yao, Engineer from Environment & Energy Issue Department, what he thought of the ADS EVO after using it.

Mr. Chris Yao: Initially, we were worried that installing such robot drivers might be difficult, and instead, it would require more effort. However, the ADS EVO is smaller, lighter, and easier to install than similar products we have used before. The adjustment feature makes it much faster and easier to set positions, which helps us run tests more efficiently.
