Highly Accurate Measurements of Nine Emission Components Performed with One Device in Both Laboratory and Real World Tests

HORIBA, Ltd. is proud to release the new Compact Emissions Measurement System MEXAcube a solution to measure engine emissions equipped with HORIBA’s unique Infrared Laser Absorption Modulation (IRLAM™*1) technology developed in 2021. This new measurement system can also measure emissions from carbon-neutral fuels, such as hydrogen with high concentration of water as well as ammonia, thereby contributing to the development of next-generation mobility with diverse needs, including high efficiency.

MEXAcube is suitable to be used under laboratory conditions and on-board of vehicles. This single device can provide highly accurate measurements of nine different emission components, including ammonia (NH3), nitrous oxide (N2O), and formaldehyde (HCHO) which is newly required in the Euro 7*2 and other new exhaust regulations*3. The solution is also robust enough to handle the extreme environmental conditions unique to Real Driving Emission (RDE) tests to measure exhaust gas while driving on the road. This product not only accommodates on-board RDE vehicle tests but also satisfies the needs of customers who do not have the necessary emission testing equipment at their existing laboratories.

In addition, this eco-friendly solution lowers power consumption up to about 80%*4 while reducing the regular replacement of necessary parts roughly 30%*5, contributing to reduction of the environmental impact and costs.

Global warming and other climate-related issues are problems that all mankind is facing. Many countries are ramping up efforts to shift to alternative energies in the pursuit carbon neutrality, which is the key to resolving these climate-related problems. The automotive industry is likely to make long-term advancements in the use of electric and hydrogen alternatives, but building the social infrastructure is still expected to take quite some time. For this reason, carbon-neutral initiatives are eagerly working to develop ammonia, biofuel, and other alternative fuels as development requirements expand to adapt to a broader range of energies and fuels as well as more pervasive challenges in capital investments. Air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions have also remained major issues associated with internal combustion engines, which is further heightening interest in new exhaust emission regulations for automobiles. The new Euro 7 rules on emissions set for adoption in Europe plan to add new and more strictly regulated emissions components for heavy-duty vehicles in lab and real road tests.

Kazuya Tsurumi, Junior Corporate Officer and General Manager of the Energy & Environment Business Division at HORIBA Ltd. says, “We developed the MEXAcube to address the measurement needs associated with the demands of next-generation mobility development and the latest regulations. Since launching its first engine emissions measurement system in the 1960s, HORIBA has contributed to the research and development of cleaner and more efficient automobiles while always standing at the forefront of emission measurement technologies and thinking the global environment as one of its missions. We will continue to provide an expansive lineup of high-quality products to satisfy the increasing and diversifying measurement needs against a backdrop of the next generation mobility development and new emissions standards, thereby providing solutions that meet the challenges faced by our customers.”
