At the heart of the project were young people from the Northampton Saints Foundation’s Engage Plus Programme, who worked in partnership with Northampton College to design the garden. The initiative provided a valuable opportunity for participants to develop new skills, build confidence, and contribute meaningfully to a project that will benefit others in the community. Northampton Saints Foundation’s employability programmes support young people aged 16–19 to build confidence, gain recognised qualifications, and develop essential work-ready skills through hands-on learning, employer engagement, and real-world experience. By offering structured pathways into education, training, and employment, the programmes play a key role in reducing NEET figures, closing skill gaps while opening up exciting opportunities and helping young people take positive steps towards their future careers.
Many of the young people involved face significant challenges, including disengagement from education and barriers to employment. Through this project, however, they demonstrated remarkable resilience, creativity, and teamwork by working together to design a space that reflects both cultural inspiration and community need.
On the day of the build, volunteers from HORIBA UK joined the young people to bring the garden to life, working side by side to transform the outdoor space. Additional support came from other local businesses, including MV Kelly, Siemens, ADI, Rotary, Sonepar, Semilog Services, Barrett Homes, Carlsberg, and Kier who contributed by planting fruit and vegetable trees, fence painting, garden maintaining and helping to enhance the wider grounds of The Hope Centre. Together, these efforts created a peaceful sanctuary for residents, offering opportunities to grow fresh produce, take part in outdoor activities, like painting, and support both physical and mental wellbeing.
The completed garden was officially unveiled on Thursday 30th April during a special event attended by the outgoing Mayor, Cllr Jane Birch, who met with representatives from the charities, HORIBA UK, and residents of The Hope Centre. The visit provided an opportunity to reflect on the impact of the project and the importance of collaboration initiatives like this in driving positive change within the local community.
The unveiling marked a proud and emotional moment for everyone involved. Residents and staff from The Hope Centre stood alongside the young people, volunteers, and supporters to celebrate what can be achieved when organisations and individuals come together with a shared purpose.
Speaking about the project, Craig Phillips, Northampton Saints Foundation’s Head of Employability and Skills, said: “Projects like this show young people what can be achieved when organisations come together with a shared purpose. Not only have the participants developed practical skills, confidence, and teamwork, but they’ve also had the opportunity to make a genuine difference to the lives of others at The Hope Centre. Seeing the positive impact on service users has been incredibly rewarding for everyone involved.”
Chris Potter, Fundraising. Communications and Marketing Manager at The Hope Centre commented: “This project means so much to everyone at The Hope Centre and to the people who use our services. Having a dedicated space like this gives our residents a place where they can step away, reflect, and reconnect with themselves and with others. It’s somewhere they can spend time outdoors, take part in activities, and even grow their own fruit and vegetables, which brings a real sense of purpose and achievement.
What makes this garden truly special is the story behind it, the young people who designed it, the volunteers who brought it to life, and the organisations that came together to make it happen. We are incredibly grateful to HORIBA UK, Northampton Saints Foundation, and all the local businesses who supported the project. Their generosity, time, and commitment have created something that will have a lasting impact on our community for years to come.”
Aimee Baker, CSR Coordinator at HORIBA UK, said: “This has truly been a community project with a difference. It’s inspiring to see what can be achieved when local businesses, charities, and young people collaborate towards a common goal. Projects like this create lasting, tangible outcomes for the community and empower individuals, helping to build confidence, skills, and a sense of belonging. We strongly believe that businesses have an important role to play in supporting their local communities, and through partnerships like this, we can create meaningful impact that extends far beyond a single initiative.”
Through initiatives such as this, HORIBA UK continues to demonstrate its commitment to supporting local communities, fostering partnerships, and creating opportunities that bring people together to make a lasting difference.
