The significant increase in Hb A1c testing has led to the incidental detection of hemoglobin variants. This raises questions regarding the prevalence of hemoglobin variants in the general population and also, whether it is good practice for formal identification of these variants to be carried out by the hematology laboratory. In this session, David Strutt will discuss a retrospective study from 2015 and 2016 and the detection of a novel hemoglobin variant at Torbay Hospital.
