General Summary:

Under the general supervision of the Engineering Manager, the Sr. Applications Engineer is responsible for internal and external applications of digital mass flow controllers (DMFC) and/or internal and external applications of Process Monitoring products, and related equipment and technology. This includes but is not limited to service and manufacturing equipment and software as well as customer software and applications.

Essential Functions:

  • Manage application development in semiconductor segment with strong technical background.
  • Translates requirements of technical documents into the equipment and software configurations required for internal and external support.
  • Technical liaison between customer’s technology groups and HORIBA groups in Japan to expand the business in current and new areas.
  • Provides customer consultation for problem-solving and customer specific applications within scope of supply and warranty requirements as well as training field service.
  • Tests newly developed product functional features as part of the overall product quality review.
  • Assists Technical Specialist in training activities.

Job Relationships:

Communication/Interface:

Interfaces with Engineers, Project/Product Managers, technical specialists and customers to ensure product quality and semiconductor process integrity.  Versed in Japanese communication preferred.

Accountability:

Responsible for being the customer’s primary engineering interface and generating product applications/projects resulting in profitable orders.

Decision-Making and Problem-Solving:

Resolution of engineering, sales, and customer service issues commensurate with the level of expertise, knowledge and training. Refers complex or unusual issues to management.

Skills and Knowledge:

This general description covers all levels/grades of the job.  Level and grade assignments are determined by the attached leveling guidelines.  Minimum qualifications are outlined below:

Knowledge Of:

Requires highly skilled in DOE, independent experiments, and data analysis with strong technical background in related areas.  Incumbent will have a Masters of Science in Physics, Material Science, or Chemistry. PhD highly preferred.

Skills Demonstrated By:

  1. Thin film processing and analysis experience required
  2. Ability to accurately assess customer’s engineering needs and to recommend the most appropriate product or service.
  3. Ability to guide direct and respond to technical queries at the system level.
  4. Ability to provide timely and complete product and service quotations.
  5. Ability to develop new applications & engineering opportunities to work effectively with internal departments to provide the highest level of customer service possible.

Leveling Guide - Applications Engineer

  1. Requires 0-2 years of experience in application engineering, outside sales or semiconductor applications.
  2. Requires 2-4 years experience with technical sales of scientific equipment or semiconductor-related equipment.  Requires 2-4 years of engineering/applications experience.  Ability to develop new leads, territories and accounts with support of Sales Manager. May be involved in servicing major accounts.
  3. Requires 4-8 years of experience with technical sales of scientific equipment or semiconductor-related equipment and 2-4 years in engineering/applications.  Ability to develop new leads, territories and accounts with minimal support.  May be responsible for servicing major accounts.
  4. Requires 8 or more years of experience technical sales of scientific equipment or semiconductor-related equipment.  Must have 4 years experience with semiconductor tools and applications and 2-4 years in engineering/applications.  Total responsibility to manage and service a major account.  Ability to independently develop new leads, territories and accounts.
