Measuring Exhaust Gases during Running World’s First On-Board Emissions Measurement System Developed


HORIBA, Ltd. has developed the world’s first on-vehicle type exhaust gas measuring system that can be operated on a vehicle while it is running on an ordinary road.
This system enables collection of various information on exhaust gases during actual running, such as exhaust gas weight, fuel economy, location information, etc. Effective data for working out countermeasures to environmental and energy issues can be collected, because this system provides an alternative to fixed running pattern (Mode measurements) in the form of accurate measurements of gas emission from a vehicle running on an ordinary road (On-road measurements), which had previously been impossible to gather.

●Main Features
This system measures in a continuous manner CO, CO2, HC, NOX and A/F being emitted from a vehicle running on the road, and computes, from the measurements recorded by the exhaust gas flow meter, the exhaust gas weight and the fuel economy in relation to mileage. Furthermore, it enables comprehensive measurement of running conditions of a vehicle, including location information via GPS and data on running conditions from a variety of sensors. The most prominent feature of this system is its ability to make on-vehicle and real-time measurements of the exhaust gas weight, which were conventionally difficult to achieve without full-scale experimental facilities.

●Application Areas
With the instrumentation installed in the vehicle and the on-road exhaust gas measurement implemented, the range of applications of this system is extended from conventional technical measurement areas to more familiar and practical ones. We believe the system will greatly contribute to, for example, investigation into the real conditions of exhaust gases while running, research and development of automobiles and catalysts, research into the age variation of exhaust gases, etc.

- Research into exhaust gas emissions with reference to traffic conditions, environmental factors (climate, temperature, etc.)
- Analysis of local pollution, for example at a congestion zone or in the vicinity of a crossing
- Research and development of automobiles and catalysts
- Research into the age variation of exhaust gases from vehicles in actual service, and so on

- Gasoline vehicles, diesel vehicles
- Hybrid vehicles, vehicles running on alternative fuels such as LPG, natural gas (CNG), etc.
- Heavy-duty trucks, as well as heavy construction vehicles like crane trucks and bulldozers
