World Blood Cancer Day

HORIBA UK Limited is raising awareness of the World Blood Cancer Day and shows support to people who are affected by it. Blood cancer is the third biggest cancer killer that affects more than 15,000 people and the fifth most common type of cancer in the UK. Worldwide every 35 seconds someone is diagnosed with blood cancer while in the UK there are 40,000 diagnoses every year.

HORIBA Medical produce blood testing analysers which are used every day to both diagnose and monitor the treatment of patients with various blood cancers. So these disorders are very close to our heart. In 2019, the Medical team of HORIBA UK Ltd started a campaign to raise awareness and also generate fund-raising with a challenge to fold one-thousand origami cranes.

According to Japanese legend, anyone who makes one thousand origami cranes (千羽鶴せんばづ or Senbazuru), will see their wishes come true. Traditionally, the one thousand cranes are made into garlands to be offered to sick relatives, during a birth or wedding celebration. The paper crane also has an even greater significance as a symbol of peace.

In 1955, a twelve-year-old girl called Sadako Sasaki, was diagnosed with leukaemia as a result of the Hiroshima bomb ten years before. While she was in hospital, a friend brought her origami paper and told her the legend that anyone who folded a thousand cranes, would surely be healed.

Sadako began folding paper cranes but, sadly, she succumbed to the disease before completing them all. Her friends continued her task, forming a paper crane club and the story spread. This led to funds being raised to erect a statue in Sadako's honour, and that of all child victims of the bombings.  Sadako's statue stands today in Hiroshima Peace Park in Japan.

Because of the connection between origami cranes and leukaemia, one of the main types of blood cancer, HORIBA UK Ltd has been raising awareness by folding paper cranes at events and exhibitions we have participated in and sponsoring the Blood Cancer UK (formerly Bloodwise) charity at the IBMS Congress. Today, we are proud to announce that we have reached 1000 cranes and we are continuing to fold more.
