Our North American Automotive group is searching for a Functional Safety expert to join our elite team based in Sunnyvale, CA, at the heart of Silicon Valley.  This person will be adept in delivering functional safety by following the principles of ISO 26262 and other standards to deliver expert, practical advice to an array of clients, including start-up organizations.  Projects will be across all vehicle domains, requiring varying levels of autonomy; and, can range from delivery of a 2-hour training course to a 3-year turn-key project.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Works closely with the existing company electrical/electronic development teams (systems, hardware, embedded software, integration) to deliver successful results through robust, consistent process which is compliant with ISO 26262
  • Audits processes and technically assessing safety related product
  • Works autonomously across various vehicle domains and at levels from the semiconductor design to system design to vehicle design, with the back-up of an off-line team of experts should a second opinion be needed
  • Develops and delivers training programs at various levels on functional safety
  • Takes responsibility for the functional (including safety) requirements deck
  • Evaluates architectures for functional safety acceptability, while offering guidance to bridge gaps.  
  • Executes specific safety analyses (including H&R, FMEA, FMEDA, DFA, and quantitative FTA), using tools such as Reliability Workbench and Ansys Medini 
  • Develops functional safety plans, and safety case arguments/evidence 
  • Supports business development activities: promoting HORIBA’s expertise to prospective customers and developing technical proposals in response to customer requests detailing the proposed technical approach and estimated effort/costs. 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Minimum requirement of a Bachelor’s degree in electrical/electronic engineering, systems engineering or a related discipline, Master’s Degree preferred. 
  • 7+ years’ knowledge of systems engineering, embedded software (firmware development) and hardware electronics development, for safety related systems
  • 5+ years’ experience of applying functional safety to automotive systems, preferably in the position of safety manager or coordinating a small team
  • Ideally the position holder will have experience with specialist development and safety analysis tools such as Isograph Reliability Workbench, Jama/DOORS, Enterprise Architect/Rhapsody and Ansys Medini
  • Ability to communicate to senior customer engineers and executives in both written and verbal forms providing clear technical direction and inspiring confidence in the quality of the HORIBA work
  • Ability of work either independently or leading a team, able to execute designated tasks accurately and within timing and budget constraints
  • Have well-developed analytical skills, a person who is rigorous but pragmatic, being able to justify decisions with solid rationale
