HORIBA Connect Webinar Series: Enabling a Better Haematology Diagnosis

29/03/2022

“HORIBA CONNECT – Enabling a Better Haematology Diagnosis” webinar series discusses the role of quality control and a number of interesting haematology cases. The series is comprised of four sessions:

Session 1: "The Incidental Detection of Haemoglobin Variants Through HbA1c Analysis and the Detection of Novel Haemoglobin Variant" with David Strutt.
The significant increase in Hb A1c testing has led to the incidental detection of haemoglobin variants. This raises questions regarding the prevalence of haemoglobin variants in the general population and also, whether it is good practice for formal identification of these variants to be carried out by the haematology laboratory. In this session, David Strutt discusses a retrospective study from 2015 and 2016 and the detection of a novel haemoglobin variant at Torbay Hospital.

Session 2: “A Comparison of Optical and Impedance Platelet Counts on the Yumizen Platform” with Raymond Dominic Toghill, University Hospital of Wales.
In this session, Dominic Toghill presents a study about a validation exercise comparing the two methodologies for platelet counting available on the HORIBA Yumizen analysers. This brief study looked at three levels of platelet populations and compared the counting methodologies for correlation and bias.

Session 3: “Quality Control of Blood Components: The Welsh Experience” with Lesley Evans, Welsh Blood Service
Leslie Evans gives an overview of how the Quality Assurance Laboratory supports the Welsh Blood Service in the supply of blood products to hospitals in Wales and how the HORIBA Medical analysers are used to provide this support.

Session 4: “Parasites in the Night” with Caitlin MacDonald and Jennifer Hodgson, North Devon Hospital, Barnstaple.
Caitlin MacDonald and Jennifer Hodgson present an interesting and unusual Babesiosis case from a very poorly patient with retics 21% or 649x10*9, but negative RDT for malarial parasites and what the blood film indicates.
