Presented by: Mark Bowen FRCVS
Strangles is a highly infectious and potentially life threatening bacterial respiratory disease that can have devastating consequences to any equine and any yard, causing huge disruption and economic loss.
While pre-movement testing for strangles is widely recommended within livery yards, requiring serology before horses arrive, this cannot necessarily prevent strangles outbreaks associated with new arrivals, nor are these results as clear-cut as owners would like. Whilst guttural pouch lavage has much greater sensitivity for identifying carriers, it can also cause confusion when pathology is examined and Streptococcus equi subsp. zooepidemicus is identified.
In this webinar, equine RCVS Specialist Professor Mark Bowen FRCVS shares extensive experience of dealing with strangles and discusses its management, including diagnostic techniques and tools, biosecurity measures and vaccination.
