Glass electrode
Since the glass response is fragile, do not expose it to physical impact.
Wipe off any stains on the glass membrane with a soft wet cloth or sponge soaked in water
Store the glass electrode submerged in a solution containing a low concentration of the ions to be measured. (Store in a dry state if not used for an extended period.)
Before using a glass electrode that has been stored in a dry state for an extended period, immerse it in a solution containing a low concentration of the ions to be measured for six to twelve hours then check that it gives stable measurements in reference solution.
Solid membrane electrode
Store the electrode submerged in a solution containing a low concentration of the ions to be measured. (Store in a dry state if not used for an extended period.)
If the electrode surface is covered by precipitate, perform the following: if the sensitive membrane is a solid polycrystal, recover the electrode surface by polishing it with P1200 fine polishing paper; if the sensitive membrane is a single crystal, recover the surface by cleaning it with alcohol for five to ten minutes.
After performing a recovery procedure, prepare the calibration curve again.
Before using a solid polycrystal membrane electrode that has been stored in air for an extended period, subject it to the recovery procedure stated in 2 then stabilize the sensitive membrane by immersing it for an ample length of time in a solution containing a low concentration of the ions to be measured. If the electrode has not stabilized sufficiently, a reliable calibration curve may not be obtained.
Liquid membrane electrode
Store the electrode submerged in a solution containing a low concentration of the ions to be measured.
Confirm that the porous membrane is not stained or damaged and check the state of the ion-exchange and internal liquids.
Diaphragm electrode
Store the electrode submerged in a solution with the same composition as that of the internal liquid, or in a solution containing a low concentration of the ions to be measured.
Confirm that the diaphragm is not stained or damaged and check the state of the internal liquid. If the membrane is stained or damaged, or if the potential gradient or response speed has decreased, replace the diaphragm and the internal solution, and remove stains by cleaning the internal electrode with pure water or ethanol.
