Observing color changes after making purple cabbage extract acidic or alkaline.
Regenerative medicine repairs organs and tissues lost due to illness or injury, using new cells. An event hosted by Osaka Prefecture designed for children to have fun learning about this front-line medical technology called Future Medical EXPO for Kids/for Youth was held at Nakanoshima Qross, a hub for the industrialization of future medical care, in Osaka.
HORIBA Advanced Techno held a workshop for elementary and junior high school students attending the event, on Regenerative Medicine and pH Management. Through hands-on experience measuring the pH of purple cabbage, the children learned how measurement technology is useful in medical and research settings.
The workshop
In the lesson, students mixed citric acid and baking soda with the extract of purple cabbage, which turns a different color depending on the pH. They were able to experience the fun of actually measuring the pH firsthand, as they watched the colors change.
HORIBA Advanced Techno is based at Nakanoshima Qross, which aims to industrialize advanced medical technologies, and through diverse interactions with industry, academia, and medicine, is promoting measurement technologies required in regenerative medicine.
Moving forward, we will continue creating opportunities for children to become interested in the world of medicine and science, while conveying the joy and fun of measuring.
