The Clot Thickens

Presented by: Dr Kit Sturgess; MA; VetMB; PhD; CertVR; DSAM; CertVC; FRCVS

In this webinar, Dr Kit Sturgess explores bleeding and the critical role of the clotting pathways in veterinary medicine. Kit covers a wide range of normal and abnormal scenarios, from routine sampling prior to biopsy or neutering, to complex cases involving suspected poisonings or DIC. He looks at patients with a history of unexplained bleeding, those actively bleeding, and those actively clotting.

Following a comprehensive review of the clotting system, Kit explains:

  • How to assess clotting using in-clinic and external laboratory tests
  • Key considerations at patient side and in-house, including history, thorough physical examination, and clinical presentation
  • Practical approaches to controlling bleeding, emergency transfusion protocols, and indications for the use of whole blood and specific blood products
  • Management of active bleeding in thrombocytopenic patients, snakebite cases, bleeding in hound types, liver disease in cats, and amyloidosis

The session includes real-world case studies, such as patients presented with:

  • intra-abdominal granular lymphoma
  • ocular haemorrhage
  • lethargy and inappetence
  • haemangioma following splenectomy and more.

This webinar offers practical insights for managing bleeding and various clotting disorders; equipping veterinary teams with the knowledge to make informed decisions in challenging clinical situations.
