Experience the Joy of Measuring the blueness of Sky! Exciting Adventures with "Sorayomi Note"

HORIBA, a Bronze Partner for the “Future of Life” pavilion at the Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan (hereinafter EXPO 2025), contributes to research and development that protects the Earth's environment and human health through its unique “Analytical and Measurement” technologies. To further highlight the socially significant and captivating aspects of these technologies, we have released the “Sorayomi Note™” app, which allows anyone to easily experience "measuring," coinciding with the EXPO 2025. Three months since its release, beautiful skies from all over the world have been shared with us.

The Story Behind of “Sorayomi Note”

Through the EXPO 2025, we wanted people to understand the societal importance of “Analytical and Measurement” technologies and how they are applied in everyday life. These technologies help us discover many new things by unveiling the unknown. Our desire to share the joy of new discoveries through our innovative approaches and create a platform where people from around the world, interested in the EXPO 2025, can communicate through these discoveries. This desire led to the creation of “Sorayomi Note,” focusing on the universally accessible target of the sky, and spreading the joy of exploration and understanding.

Harnessing the Power of the Cyanometer with “Sorayomi Note”

“Sorayomi Note” allows anyone to easily measure the blueness of the sky. Simply take a photo of the sky above you with your smartphone camera, then measure its bluness  using the Cyanometer. You can also record your feelings as you gaze up at the sky. By continuing to record, you can discover and enjoy the correlation between your unique sky and your feelings.
Additionally, you can compare your sky with other users' skies, categorize entries by region or time, and find your favorite patterns, much like comparing measurement data.
To arrive at the idea for “Sorayomi Note,” we discussed tools that could provide an easy and understandable experience of “Analytical and Measurement” technologies.

This led to the adoption of the Cyanometer, invented by Horace-Bénédict de Saussure in the late 18th century. The Cyanometer quantitatively measures the blueness of the sky using a gradient gauge of blue shades, from dark to light, for visual measurement. With this tool, early scientists revealed that the color of the sky changes based on the quantity of particles, droplets, and ice crystals in the atmosphere. By modernizing this scientific method as “Sorayomi Note,” we offer the joy of easily measuring and sharing the blueness of the sky with everyone.

Connecting the World through “Sorayomi”

The name “Sorayomi Note” is inspired by Japanese classical literature. In this context, “sora” holds the meaning of both “sky” and “feelings,” while “yomi” means “to read,” so “Sorayomi” expresses the idea of “reading both the sky and your emotions.” By capturing the sky and recording your feelings in your personal “note of the mine,” you can then share and connect with people worldwide.
