The significant increase in Hb A1c testing has led to the incidental detection of haemoglobin variants. This raises questions regarding the prevalence of haemoglobin variants in the general population and also, whether it is good practice for formal identification of these variants to be carried out by the haematology laboratory. In this session, David Strutt will discuss a retrospective study from 2015 and 2016 and the detection of a novel haemoglobin variant at Torbay Hospital.
