Joy & Fun for Next Generation : Empowering Thai Youth for a Sustainable Future

HORIBA is passionate about fostering next-generation education and sharing the joy of measurement and analysis with youth worldwide. As part of our Mid-Long Term Management Plan, "MLMAP 2028*1," one of whose key pillars is the sustainability strategy, we are actively promoting initiatives focused on next-generation education across the entire group. By maximizing HORIBA's impact on society and contributing to the sustainability of our future planet, we aim to realize our vision: "Joy & Fun for All."

Today, we are excited to introduce the next-generation education activities of HORIBA (Thailand) Limited.

United for Sustainability: Inspiring Thai Youth – Because Tomorrow Begins Today

On June 5, 2025, in celebration of World Environment Day, as global attention focused on climate change and sustainability, the team from HORIBA Thailand organized a meaningful event, sharing the spirit of giving and passing on inspiration across generations.

The event took place at Wat Khlong Chao Elementary School, Chachoengsao Province, Thailand, and  it was a powerful collaboration with HORIBA.

This special day brought together 67 students from grades 4 to 6, more than 10 dedicated teachers, and 19 HORIBARIANs*2. Together, they created an unforgettable day for the children. The day was filled with smiles, knowledge, and engaging, meaningful activities. Although the event lasted only a day, the energy and encouragement shared will resonate in the children's lives for years to come. We believe that learning beyond the classroom is at the heart of true growth.

Creative Activities Blending Science and the Environment

One of the key highlights of this event was hands-on learning—carefully designed by HORIBA  to be both fun and educational. The students were given the chance to explore the world of science through real-life applications, far beyond what they usually see in textbooks. At each activity station, they practiced thinking critically, analyzing data, and conducting their own experiments under the theme “Measuring is Seeing”—a foundation of sustainable learning.

The team brought actual HORIBA measuring instruments and tools used in the field—to demonstrate how they work, while giving students the opportunity to try them out for themselves. The devices were carefully selected for their simplicity, ease of use, and strong connection to the students’ classroom lessons, such as measuring water and air quality.

U-50: Multi-parameter Water Quality Checker – Easy to Use, Deeper Understanding of Nature

One of the most exciting hands-on activities for the students was testing water quality using HORIBA’s U-50 Series—a portable water quality meter known for its ease of use and ability to measure multiple parameters in a single test. These include pH (acidity or alkalinity), DO (Dissolved Oxygen), Turbidity (cloudiness), Temperature, and several other water quality indicators.

Students dipped the probe into various water samples, including soda, laundry detergent, and soapy water, to instantly capture and display real-time results.

HORIBA selected the U-50 for this activity because of its simple, intuitive operation—just dip and read. Seeing real-time results helped students clearly understand scientific concepts they’d learned in class, connect them to everyday life, and recognize the difference between clean and polluted water.

MEXA-584L: Automotive Emission Analyzer

Did you know that motorcycles, despite their small size, can emit a significant amount of exhaust gases? But how can we identify the types of gases emitted by motorcycles and understand their impact on the environment? That’s where the MEXA-584L from HORIBA comes in—a highly accurate exhaust gas analyzer designed specifically for motorcycles. It helps determine whether the engine is burning fuel efficiently and identifies the types of gases being emitted.

The process is simple: the probe is connected to the end of the motorcycle’s exhaust pipe. The device then draws in a small sample of the exhaust and analyzes it. The screen displays the concentrations of different gases, including:

  • CO (Carbon Monoxide) – a toxic gas from incomplete combustion,
  • CO₂ (Carbon Dioxide) – a major greenhouse gas,
  • HC (Hydrocarbons) – unburned fuel contributing to smog,
  • O₂ (Oxygen) – leftover oxygen from the combustion process.

For this activity, HORIBA provided two motorcycles of different ages and maintenance histories. Students were able to observe how vehicle age and engine maintenance affect the level of pollution emitted.

HORIBA chose this demonstration because it offers highly relatable learning experience for students. They could see real smoke, understand its effects, and connect environmental impact to everyday objects. The activity introduced scientific concepts like combustion and air composition, while also sparking the idea that innovation can play a role in pollution control. More importantly, it helped students realize that protecting the environment can begin with small actions—like maintaining our vehicles to reduce harmful emissions.

Fostering Environmental and Scientific Awareness

To further encourage understanding and care for the planet, HORIBA organized additional activities aimed at raising environmental and scientific awareness. Children were invited to answer thought-provoking questions about the environment, with small prizes offered as rewards. Most questions encouraged students to express their opinions, for example, by sharing ways they take care of the environment at home. One touching response was “planting trees at home.”

Another creative question asked students to imagine having a superpower that could turn trash into something valuable. One student chose to transform trash into trees to help reduce pollution and save the Earth.

In addition, the children participated in a Science Awareness Survey designed to explore their interests and potential in science. The survey results were very positive and revealed several interesting insights!

Gifts and Joyful Moments

To support creative learning and play, HORIBA organized a donation activity for the school, which included sports equipment, stationery, and educational board games that combine fun with learning. In addition, refreshing ice cream was served, bringing smiles and happiness to the children. This was another meaningful activity that enriched both knowledge and joy at the same time.

Tree Planting = Planting Dreams

The final activity of the day was tree planting within the school grounds. But this was more than just putting trees into the soil—it was about planting the roots of hope. It symbolized our belief that this land will flourish with greenery, and that the young minds here will grow alongside it.

Although we planted just one tree, we hope this small beginning will grow alongside the children’s dreams and aspirations. This simple act marks the beginning of a greater journey.

The students who took part today may one day grow up to become researchers, engineers, or changemakers, perhaps even the next generation of HORIBARIANs who will help shape a better world.

Next Step: Growing Roots into Real Impact – Building a Sustainable Future Together

Though today’s activities have come to an end, HORIBA Thailand’s future goals include:

  • Expanding the program to more schools
  • Introducing new knowledge that aligns with an ever-changing world
  • And of course … planting more trees every year!
