Myeloblast
  • Size : Large, 15-20 µm
  • N/C ratio= Elevated, 0.7
  • Cytoplasm
    • Extension : Abundant
    • Basophilia : Intense
    • Number of granules : Rare
    • Color of granules : Red = azurophils
    • Membrane : Regular
  • Nucleus
    • Situation : Eccentric
    • Chromatin : Fine
    • Nucleoli : Present
    • Membrane : Regular
  • Normal values : Absent in the blood, <5% in the bone marrow
  • Description / Pathology :

Large size cell, with regular polyhedral nucleus, fine chromatin with 1-3 distinct nucleoli, cytoplasm with few azurophilic granules sometimes clearly visible, rather grouped at one pole of the cells.

The presence of isolated Auer rods, not grouped in bundles, confirms the diagnosis of AML (or myelodysplastic syndrome type AREB II if <20% of bone marrow blasts).

Acute myeloblastic leukemia Blasts associated with a balanced myelemia (myeloproliferative syndrome, in particular CML) reactive myelemia or granulocytic regeneration.
