Curiosity is often the starting point for a lifelong interest in science. At HORIBA, supporting education and inspiring future generations are key parts of our commitment to society. By giving young people access to professional measurement technology, we aim to spark an interest in science and help nurture tomorrow’s innovators and researchers.
To support this mission, HORIBA Europe GmbH (Germany) provided professional measurement instruments for the summer course “Clear as Water!”, organized by the MINT Center Darmstadt, a STEM education center. During the one-week program, 20 students aged 10 to 13 gained hands-on experience conducting scientific research and measurement technology commonly used in laboratories, environmental analysis, and industrial applications.
The course focused on the topic of water from biological, chemical, and physical perspectives, while also addressing sustainability challenges. The course also highlighted two United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Goal 6, “Clean Water and Sanitation”, and Goal 14, “Life Below Water.”
A key part of the program was the use of HORIBA’s LAQUAtwin Pocket Water Quality Meters. These compact instruments enabled students to independently measure and analyse water samples, collect data, and explore scientific questions through practical experimentation. By working with professional equipment, participants experienced how modern analytical technologies are used to assess and monitor water quality.
As part of their investigations, the young researchers collected samples from different local water sources and compared the results. They also analysed tap water brought from home and discussed the differences observed in the measurements. Through these activities, students learned the importance of precise data collection and how to draw evidence-based conclusions in environmental science.
By supporting initiatives such as this summer course, HORIBA Europe contributes to STEM education and helps make science accessible, engaging, and relevant. Working with professional-grade measurement instruments gave students a tangible way to connect scientific concepts with real-world environmental questions. The experience also demonstrated how research and innovation can contribute to a more sustainable future.
Ultimately, “Clear as Water!” showed how hands-on experimentation can bring science to life and inspire lasting interest in STEM subjects.
