Protecting water for daily life
− Water quality monitoring in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia−

In areas where urbanization is progressing, water pollution can become a serious problem as cities grow. Particularly in areas where plumbing and infrastructure are not well developed, even if the water produced at water treatment facilities is clean, it is not uncommon for the water coming out of faucets to be dirty.
With a focus on the development of water infrastructure in Southeast Asian countries, at HORIBA, through our Asian base HORIBA Instruments (Singapore) Pte. Ltd., we are actively working to improve water quality in the region.

Pollution of domestic water is a particular problem in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where urbanization is rapidly progressing. In 2018, we started installing HORIBA TW series of online water quality monitor in the environmental water quality monitoring network for potable water.

The TW Series monitors water safety with space-saving automatic monitoring of items necessary for daily water quality testing, such as turbidity, color, and residual chlorine.
> Turbidity: Microscopic particles and invisible dirt
> Color: Degree of water coloration
> Residual chlorine: Concentration of free residual chlorine that has sterilizing effect

By monitoring this data in real time, we manage water quality, which is closely related to the lives of local people.
Approximately 190 TW Series monitors have been installed in the city's reservoirs, distribution reservoirs, and at the ends of water supply pipes, to protect the water environment that residents can safely use with confidence.

Focusing on maintenance support for sustainable operation

At HORIBA, we do more than simply install equipment. Our goal is to ensure that the water quality meters operate stably over the long term and that a system that provides safe and secure water to local people takes root. For this reason, we also focus on operations and maintenance support to ensure that local engineers can effectively use the water quality meters.

Training Malaysian engineers

For these installations, we first conducted on-site inspections and trial runs to identify local questions and concerns. Then we made adjustments to suit the local infrastructure and operating environment. Measurement failures caused by dirty or clogged pipes in the water supply system of Kuala Lumpur had become an issue. To improve the system in order to prevent measurement failures caused by dirt, we analyzed the cause, made adjustments to the piping flow paths on the insides of the TW monitors and proposed cleaning methods.

After the equipment was installed, KL engineers were invited to HORIBA's head office for a one-week training program. During the program, development members of our head office explained the measurement principles and basic operations, and engineers from HORIBA Techno Service* provided training on inspection methods and maintenance work. The content was practical, sharing knowledge that will be useful in the field. The Malaysian engineers also visited TW Series installation sites in Japan and toured a water purification plant to learn about water quality monitoring methods in Japan, and exchanged opinions such as how this could be applied to the potable water supply environment in Kuala Lumpur.

Issues related to water quality vary from region to region. At HORIBA, we carefully study local issues and listen to the voices of the community as we strive to propose the best ways to operate water quality meters.

Based on our mission to protect the quality of all water around the world, HORIBA Advanced Techno will continue to work to improve the global water environment, aiming to create a society where all people around the world have access to safe and secure water .
