Quality control of hand sanitizer gels and 70% alcohol products using Raman spectroscopy

70° alcohol, frequently used as local antiseptic, and hydroalcoholic gels belong to our daily lives especially to fight against the spreading of the COVID-19 epidemic. The efficiency of these products is based on their alcohol content. For hydroalcoholic gel, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that the product formulation contains either 80% v/V ethylic alcohol or 75% v/V isopropylic alcohol. In any cases, the alcohol concentration of hydroalcoholic gel must not be below 60% v/V, otherwise it is inefficient. Thus, it is obvious that the alcohol concentration of these products has a major health impact and must be controlled with strictness. Here, we present how Raman spectroscopy is used to determine alcohol concentrations of solutions using MVAPlus multivariate analysis application. Moreover, combined to the MultiWell application, we show how this is performed in an automated routine analysis.
