Fast, easy and safe control of Zn-Ni galvanization baths with MESA-50, a portable EDXRF

The EDXRF technique is used for the elemental analysis not only of solids, but also of liquids such as plating solution thanks to dedicated sample cells. This specific example shows the ability of MESA-50 for electrolytic baths follow-up by characterizing the degradation of Zn-Ni galvanization baths.

As the use of Cd electroplating is increasingly restricted for corrosion protection, other types of deposits have been developed to replace them. Among them, Zn-Ni alloys have proven to be effective. However, to ensure their effectiveness, the Ni and Zn concentration of the galvanizing baths must be monitored. This application note introduces quantification analysis of Zn-Ni alloy plating solutions using the MESA-50, a portable EDXRF. This small bench-top instrument allows to establish calibration curves of very good linearity with an excellent regression coefficient. We also demonstrate the very good accuracy of the results on samples taken from used baths. Thanks to a short analysis time and without any sample preparation, the concentration of the galvanizing baths can be adjusted very quickly.
