Micro-Raman spectroscopy has been widely used in the field of geology. It provides fast and non-destructive identification of minerals as well as the distribution of the different compounds or phases in geological materials. This technique gives a direct answer to compositional and structural changes occurring in analyzed materials. The high spectral resolution of modern instruments allows one to differentiate polymorphs of minerals and calculate the pressure of gasses in the inclusions based on the shift of the Raman bands. Polarization features of the Raman bands become a key for determining crystalline orientation without using X-ray diffraction.

In this presentation, we will show several micro-Raman applications:

•    Polymorphs identification
•    Crystallographic analysis of Orpiment and comparison of XRD to Raman data
•    Crystalline lattice deformation in Zircon
•    Studying of fluid and gas inclusions
•    Reconstruction of 3D images of different titanium polymorphs and their distribution in solid inclusions
