Environmental Impact Assessment (LCA and GHG Protocol)

Through a wide range of engineering and new proposals, HORIBA contributes to the reduction of environmental impact, including the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions throughout the product life cycle and customer supply chain.

To achieve a carbon neutral society, it is important to assess the environmental impact of products as a whole and corporate activities as a whole, not only during product use, but also through life cycle assessment (LCA) and GHG protocols. Assessing these assessments, disclosing information to stakeholders, and clarifying specific GHG reduction priorities and targets to improve the efficiency of product development and processes will lead to an overall reduction in environmental impact.

LCA and GHG Protocol

LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) is a method of assessing the environmental impact of a product or service throughout its life cycle (resource extraction - raw material production - product production - distribution and consumption - disposal and recycling). LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) is a method for evaluating the environmental impact of products and services throughout their life cycle (resource extraction - raw material production - product production - distribution and consumption - disposal and recycling).LCA is specified in the international standards ISO 14040 and 14044.

For example, the figure on the right is an overview of LCA for automobiles. Conventionally, the focus was only on CO2 emissions during driving. Nowadays, however, as required by LCA, it is the manufacturer's responsibility to reduce environmental impacts at all phases of the product life cycle, from fuel mining and materials procurement to manufacturing, use, disposal, and recycling.

The GHG Protocol is a set of guidelines published by the GHG Protocol Initiative. The protocol categorizes your entire supply chain into three scopes, called Scope 1, 2, and 3. For each of these scopes, the GHG emissions are summed to determine the GHG emissions for the customer's entire corporate activities (the entire supply chain).

HORIBA solutions for environmental impact

We provide our coustomers a wide range of analysis and measurement solutions, including services, for each stage of LCA from raw material production to disposal and recycling, and for each scope of the supply chain in the GHG Protocol and contribute to the reduction of environmental impact, including GHG reduction.

The following is a part of our solutions for facilities and equipment, and for automotive applications.

GHG gas measurement solutions for equipments and facilities

For example, to assess and improve GHG emissions in product LCA and GHG scoping, it is important to measure the actual GHG emissions and to what extent GHGs are emitted in the process. For example, continuous gas measurement contributes to the improvement of GHG emissions in sewage treatment and incineration processes.
We offer measurement solutions for three different situations (portables, facilities, and laboratories) to measure GHG emissions

Service solutions

By implementing a combination of maintenance, updates, partial renewal, and relocation of analyzers and test equipment installed by our customers, we can conserve energy and reduce GHG emissions for the entire R&D facility. We can also reduce the workload related to testing and experimentation for our customers through contracted analysis and rental or subscription of analyzers and measuring equipment.

Data reliability

Ensuring the reliability of data is also important in global environmental impact research and in understanding the amount of environmental impact reductions in various processes. For example, the active use of digital transformation (DX) technologies is accelerating in areas such as product traceability, data integrity, and security of measured data.

Data Integrity - Ensuring the integrity of measurement data with electronic records -

Electronic recording and electronic signatures ensure the integrity of analysis and measurement data and the reliability of the obtained data.

Cyber security, functional safety and EMC

HORIBA MIRA integrates development teams in the key areas of vehicle cybersecurity, functional safety, and EMC, which are receiving increasing attention in the automotive industry, as Vehicle Resilience (VRES for short) to support product development in terms of safety, security, and connectivity.

In this field, an integrated approach combining proactive and defensive design, reactive and antibody engineering and solutions is important, and requires the development of a robust framework that also meets regulatory requirements.

HORIBA MIRA offers its services through the collaboration of specialist engineers in each area and more than 14 state-of-the-art testing facilities.
