HORIBA Foundation UK

We are a believer in brilliant science.

A science shaped by diverse minds. A science tackling the issues of our time.
A science making the world a better place for all.

Our vision is to be a trusted supporter of a diverse UK science ecosystem delivering high-impact research. We do this by establishing scholarships, funding grants, and providing mentorship for next-generation scientists who will deliver new ideas and high-impact research. Our funding is focused on ensuring a diverse scientific community within the United Kingdom contributing to the realisation of a sustainable society and the preservation of the global environment and resources.

We work closely with partner higher education institutions to encourage broader participation in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) and healthcare disciplines.

We fund research across our focus fields of energy and the environment, bio and healthcare, and materials and semiconductor. Our funding aims to empower research technical professionals as valued contributors to higher education science, encourage diverse new talent at the postgraduate level, and develop young innovators through postdoctoral fellowships.

We are currently supporting scholarships and research at the following institutions:

Testimonials

So many people apply, so I didn’t really think about getting the scholarship. When I got the news, it was incredible. I was so happy. It’s fantastic to feel that people who really know Aston want to support students in this way.

Receiving the HORIBA Scholarship has made it possible for me to pursue my dream of studying Biomedical Sciences — and to do so as the first in my immediate family to earn a place at university. This award gives profound meaning to the sacrifices my family has made and reminds me why every step of this journey matters. I carry their effort with me every day, motivated to make the most of the opportunity I have been given.

Through the mentorship programme, I had the privilege of working with cutting-edge equipment developed by HORIBA UK and gaining insight into innovative techniques used in chemical and clinical analysis. Seeing how this knowledge connects directly with my degree has deepened my passion for the field and strengthened my confidence in applying theory to real-world challenges. It has also helped me to better understand the many directions my career could take — whether in laboratory research and drug discovery, within the NHS as a Biomedical Scientist, or as a Clinical Scientist through my IBMS-accredited degree. Knowing that guidance and support remain available to me, even through my final-year dissertation, gives me the confidence to push further and aim higher.

As a woman in STEM, I am acutely aware that many before me have felt discouraged or underrepresented in this space. Being a HORIBA Scholar is not only a personal milestone; it is a powerful reminder of what becomes possible when barriers are removed. HORIBA’s commitment to equity and diversity, reflected in the mission of this scholarship, fills me with both pride and a sense of responsibility. I hope it inspires other organisations to follow their lead, ensuring that less potential goes untapped and that more diverse voices are empowered to shape the future of science.

I have greatly appreciated the generous support through the HORIBA scholarship. It's a great privilege and has made a big difference in my academic year, as I have been able to focus on my degree and not on financial concerns. I have really enjoyed my first two years of university, especially my practical biology labs, as they give me hands on experience in a subject I’m interested in. I look forward to continuing my degree and making most of the opportunities the support has made possible.

It has truly given me confidence that I can succeed and reach for the stars.

We are delighted that the HORIBA Foundation UK is supporting students at Aston University. Through the HORIBA Scholarship, the Foundation is giving students much-needed practical support, but also a vote of confidence in their potential. The Scholarship is open to undergraduate STEM and healthcare students, widening access in those disciplines. It has a long-lasting impact, allowing scholars to focus solely on their education at the most critical stages of their studies.

At postgraduate level, we're thrilled that the Foundation supports the First-Generation Doctoral Success Fund, which provides opportunities for PhD students who are first in their family to attend university, helping them to succeed. These students will become research leaders, solving the many challenges we face in society, the environment and technology, while inspiring others and serving as role models for the next generation.

We're extremely grateful to the HORIBA Foundation UK for their support and commitment to the next generation of scientists.

Keele University

We’re absolutely delighted that the HORIBA Foundation UK is supporting Keele students.

These scholarships are about far more than financial support - they create opportunities. They enable students from diverse backgrounds to fully immerse themselves in Masters‑level study, build advanced scientific skills, and contribute to research that tackles real‑world challenges. This partnership reflects Keele’s values of inclusivity, social responsibility, and academic excellence.

We’re incredibly proud to work with the HORIBA Foundation UK to champion the next generation of life scientists. We see every day how transformative this support is for our students and how the Foundation’s commitment gives them the confidence and freedom to push boundaries, seize new opportunities, and realise their potential.

Northumbria University

Northumbria University

We are proud of our continued partnership with the HORIBA Foundation in supporting students at Northumbria University through our Higher Education Without Barriers fund.

Around 40% of Northumbria students come from communities where participation in higher education has traditionally been low. More than 60% are from the North East — a region with the lowest progression rate to higher education in the UK. We are committed to ensuring that everyone with the potential to succeed at university has the opportunity to achieve their ambitions.

Through the generous support of the HORIBA Foundation UK, progression scholarships are awarded to undergraduate students in STEM disciplines from underrepresented backgrounds. These scholarships help remove financial barriers that might otherwise prevent talented students from accessing and thriving in higher education.

For many students, the greatest concern is not achieving the grades required for entry, but how they will afford to study and fully engage in university life. HORIBA Scholarships ease this burden — empowering students to focus on their studies, make the most of their university experience, and progress confidently toward their future careers.

University of Strathclyde

At Strathclyde, we’ve always believed that access to education should be driven by talent, not by the ability to pay. Talented students from low‑income backgrounds can miss the opportunity to study at university because of understandable concerns about costs. Through their commitment to our STAR Scholarship programme, which supports students from low‑income or less advantaged backgrounds, the HORIBA Foundation UK is helping to remove financial barriers and open doors for STEM students at Strathclyde, encouraging them to say yes to the life‑changing opportunities available through higher education.

As one of the first universities supported by the HORIBA Foundation UK, we’ve seen the meaningful impact of their commitment to opportunity and excellence in STEM. HORIBA’s investment is far more than financial help; it’s a belief in our students’ potential. It enables them to engage fully in their studies, broaden their horizons, and experience the full richness of university life. We’re incredibly grateful for the HORIBA Foundation UK’s partnership and their shared commitment to widening access. Their support plays a vital role in helping us build a more equitable future and empowering the next generation of Strathclyders to achieve their ambitions.
