Direct Elemental Analysis of Battery Materials Using ICP-OES with ElectroThermal Vaporization (ETV)

Application note: Direct Elemental Analysis of Battery Materials Using ICP-OES with ElectroThermal Vaporization (ETV) - Illustration

This application note demonstrates the use of the HORIBA ULTIMA Expert ICP-OES equipped with an ElectroThermal Vaporization (ETV) module for the direct elemental analysis of battery materials such as graphite and carbon black.
This approach allows us to obtain simultaneous ICP-OES acquisition of transient signals generated during ETV sample introduction, enabling accurate time-resolved detection of rapid vaporization.
Unlike conventional methods requiring acid digestion, ETV enables direct solid sample introduction, significantly reducing preparation time, contamination risks, and analytical errors. Method performance is evaluated using a certified graphite reference material (BAM-S009) and carbon black samples, showing good agreement with certified values, low detection limits. The approach provides a rapid and reliable solution for battery material quality control and regulatory compliance.
