Health Management Declaration

HORIBA's unique approach to Health Management based on “Joy and Fun”

HORIBA's corporate motto, “Joy and Fun” was established in 1978 by our founder, Dr. Masao Horiba. He envisioned a workplace where employees could enjoy a healthy and fulfilling daily life, as they spend some of the best years of their lives at the company.
In May 2012, the top management reaffirmed that good mental and physical health is essential for  HORIBARIANs*1 to truly experience “Joy and Fun.”
Following this declaration, we launched the “Mental and Physical Health Promotion Project” a collaborative effort involving the health and safety dept., industrial health staff, health insurance association, in-house welfare companies, “HORIBA Community,” and labor union. This initiative promotes well-being through various unique programs rooted in the “Joy and Fun” philosophy, such as

  • The Cafeteria Committee, which promotes health through food choices,
  • The Health Up Challenge, which encourages HORIBARIANs to take an active role in their physical and mental well-being, and
  • The HORIBA Blueberry Farm, which fosters communication and team bonding.

Moving forward, we will continue to promote physical and mental health initiatives that reflect HORIBA’s corporate culture and distinctive approach. Our goal is to create an environment where HORIBARIANs can actively engage in self-care and maximize their potential. We believe this will not only enhance our corporate value but also contribute to the successful realization of our Mid-Long-Term Management Plan, “MLMAP2028,” and ultimately bring “Joy and Fun for All” in both work and life of each individual.

*1 HORIBARIANs: A term used to refer to all HORIBA Group employees, emphasizing our shared sense of family.

Physical and Mental Health Promotion Declaration

(May 7, 2012)

To stay true to the “Joy and Fun” motto, the HORIBA Group promotes its employees' physical and mental health in order to help them live fulfilling lives with a sense of purpose in both life and work as well as to realize comfortable and lively workplaces.

Chairman, President & CEO, HORIBA, Ltd.
Atsushi Horiba

Promotion Structure

Under the leadership of Chairman and Group CEO, we have launched the “Mental and Physical Health Promotion Project” to support and enhance the well-being of our employees and their families, ensuring both physical and mental health are prioritized.

Health Issues

Improving Organizational Performance

All HORIBARIANs are committed to enhancing their mental and physical well-being to maximize their potential. However, despite achieving a 100% participation rate in health checkups, the follow-up rate for secondary (detailed) examinations remains low, resulting in unresolved health anomalies.
Additionally, while the number of smokers has not decreased, many employees express discomfort due to passive smoking, which impacts their work performance (presenteeism) and is recognized as a significant concern.

Enhancing Mental Health and Creating a Vibrant Work Environment

While we have been actively engaged in mental health prevention initiatives, much of our focus has been on supporting employees already experiencing mental health challenges and addressing high-stress departments.
To help HORIBARIANs maximize their potential, as outlined in MLMAP 2028, it is essential to elevate the overall level of mental well-being across all employees. A key challenge appears to be the lack of awareness and understanding of mental health and workplace conditions, which prevents us from fostering an environment where employees can work with enthusiasm and engagement.

Inside Initiatives

●Women's Health Initiatives
To support women’s health, we established a dedicated support system and introduced various programs in October 2004. As a part of this initiative, we have a consulting agreement with a gynecology clinic, providing: priority appointments, e-mail consultations, and seminars for employees and their families. During these seminars, a doctor from the clinic discusses key topics related to women's health, promoting awareness and proactive care.

●Health Up Challenge
Since 2011, we have been conducting the "Health Up Challenge" as a corporate initiative aimed at creating opportunities for HORIBARINs to review and improve their lifestyle habits.
Each year, a three- to five-month period is dedicated to health improvement activities, focusing on themes such as developing an exercise routine and quitting smoking. The program is designed to encourage engaging and enjoyable participation.
Executives actively take part in the challenge, sharing their perspectives on health and motivating employees to participate. HORIBARINs who demonstrate exceptional progress receive executive awards in recognition of their efforts.

●Cafeteria committee
In 2008, the Cafeteria Committee was established as a collaboration between welfare teams, cafeteria operators (including dietitians), and industrial health staff. Its mission is to improve dietary habits and promote health management through food. The cafeteria offers reduced-calorie menus, provides nutritional guidance and dietary guidance to employees, and partnering with a local university to analyze health information on cafeteria patrons. Additionally, to encourage higher vegetable intake, we promote local production for local consumption by incorporating a variety of locally grown vegetables from Kyoto and Shiga prefectures.

●Operation of our own farm
In 2012, we established HORIBA Blueberry Farm “Joy & Fun” in Takashima City, Shiga prefecture. Spanning 2.1 hectares, the farm cultivates blueberries, seasonal vegetables, organic cotton, and other crops. The fruits and vegetables harvested from the farm are used in the company cafeteria and at the company's training center, and are processed into jams, juices, and other unique souvenirs. Additionally, we organize seasonal events to which HORIBARIANs and their families are invited to plant seedlings and harvest the crops. The events provide opportunities for physical, mental refreshment and communication.

●ACE21 Birthday Party
Since 1967, HORIBA has been organizing birthday parties to celebrate HORIBARIANs' birthdays. These birthday parties reflect top management’s belief in the importance of providing a space for direct communication between leaders and employees, where they can discuss management ideas, company vision, and workplace events. The meeting is held monthly in the headquarters area and at other locations in Japan, totaling approximately 20 time an year. Each meeting is attended by the Chairman, directors, and corporate officers, offering a valuable opportunity for face-to-face interaction between top management and employees. This tradition continues to foster engagement, open dialogue, and a strong corporate culture even after the company expand in size.

 in 1970s  in 2023

●Appreciation Day
The HORIBA Group organizes events on May Day, where families can participate together. Activity have included soccer games, athletic meets, and barbecues. It is an opportunity for HORIBARIANs to interact with each other beyond the boundaries of the company and departments.

●Awards from external organizations
While creating a workplace environment where employees can work in good health, HORIBA has been received several awards from external organization in recognition of our efforts.
