Macro Photoluminescence and Electroluminescence

Introduction

Typical photoluminescence, where blue photons are absorbed and red photons are emitted.

Time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) spectroscopy is an important tool which can be used to characterize optical materials such as LEDs and photovoltaic (PV) materials. Temporal information as well as spectral information can be used to understand the dynamics of excitonic transitions in such semiconductor materials. Analysis of TRPL contributes to understanding the competition between radiative and non-radiative energy transfer processes1 . When steady state PL is not enough, PL lifetime can often provide the additional information to uniquely identify a material and may help distinguish isomers or very similar materials from one another. Furthermore PL lifetime measurements can provide information about the dynamics of a material process, information that is not readily obtained from steady state PL.
