Supply of Safe Drinking Water under Changing Socio-economy
Author: Satoshi TAKIZAWA; Professor, The University of Tokyo -The world’s developed countries have achieved universal access to piped water in the last half of the 20th century, whichenabled eradication of water-related illness and construction of affluent society. In developing countries, access to safedrinking water has risen thanks to the efforts made by governments under the goals of MDGs and SDGs. Piped watersupply plays pivotal role in supply of safe drinking water, but new challenges have emerged such as improving the servicequality, egalitarian supply, and sustainable water supply business management. To overcome these challenges, it isindispensable that we build new water systems that consolidate water-related technologies and business management. Water Measurement and Expectation for it’s Open Innovation
Author: Masaki TORIMURA; National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) -While technologies in the water measurement field have greatly advanced technologies, there are some technologies (notvery good progress) that need to go ahead with still more challenging development. Comprehensive diagnostic technologyfor water and rapid detection technology for microorganisms and viruses still have many problems left. From now on, inorder to bring about technological innovation in such unachieved fields, it is important to consider deeply about the methodof using ICT and AI itself and the possibility of open innovation. The History of Water Quality Measuring Instruments Related to Industrial Wastewater Regulations
Author:Yoshifumi OGUSHI; HORIBA Advanced Techno, Co., Ltd. -In factories, foods, beverages, machines, clothes and so on are produced to support people’slives. Water is used in the production process and then it is discharged from the factory aswastewater. Since factory wastewater has a negative influence on the water environmentsuch as rivers, lakes and oceans, it is important to be properly managed. Japan hasexperienced various water pollution problems so far and has been working on conservationof the water environment by strengthening wastewater regulation. HORIBA has beendeveloping water quality measuring instruments that can measure regulated substances. Therefore, this article introduces the history of wastewater regulations and HORIBA waterquality measuring instruments used for monitoring factory wastewater. The History of Water Quality Measuring Instruments to Contribute to the Water Infrastructure Market and Future Development
Author: Tadashi KAWANO,HORIBA Advanced Techno, Co., Ltd. -The water resource available for human activity is limited to 0.01% of all the water on the earth. Waste water from industrial facilities or life work is treated to keep water resource in natural state or reusable state. Purification and treatment of water are the artificial recirculation of water to keep natural resources. Sewage treatment plant and purification plant are the representative of the water infrastructures. Water quality should be grasped for proper treatment. This paper describes the history of the HORIBA products and the future plans for the market of the water infrastruct. Note: Full paper will be downloaded from Readout No.48Japanese edition.

Measurement Technology and Product Development for Pharmaceutical Water in Manufacturing Processes of the Pharmaceutical and Food Industry
Author: Atsushi TANAKA, Yoko NAKAI, Toshio MORITA, Kohei TANAKA; HORIBA Advanced Techno, Co., Ltd. -In recent years, quality control in the pharmaceutical and food processes has become very important globally. Pharmaceutical water is directly administered to the human body, and its regulation method varied according to the regulation of each country. However, along with recent trends in globalization, international harmonization on standards of each country and movement to revise measurement items in pharmaceutical water are expanding. In this paper, we will introduce trends of measurement technology in pharmaceutical and food processes and HORIBA products against such movements. Measuring Technology and Applications for Demands from Wet Process
Author: Kentaro INOUE, Riichiro SUZUKI; HORIBA Advanced Techno, Co., Ltd. -Various kinds of chemicals and large amounts of ultra-pure water are used insemiconductor wet process. Management of those chemicals and ultra-purewater is important for improvement of process yields. Due to increasingcomplexity and miniaturization of semiconductor devices, new processes andchemicals are appearing, which can often require changes required processcontrol levels. HORIBA has been providing various process monitors based onelectrochemical or spectroscopic technologies for wet process since the late1980s. This paper describes some of those techniques briefly and introducesseveral products for wet process and applications. Note: Full paper will be downloaded from Readout No.48Japanese edition.

Request for pH Measurement in Regenerative Medicine Field and Future Development
Author: Kazuhiro MIYAMURA, Yuichi ICHINARI; HORIBA Advanced Techno, Co., Ltd. -Regenerative medicine is undergoing rapid research and development in order to disseminate it as a therapeutic method that artificially creates human tissue and restores function. To generalize the regenerative medicine, it is necessary to cultivate a large amount of stem cells such as iPS cells. pH monitoring of culture solution is an indispensable item for mass culture. The pH sensor for cell culture are “maintenance of sterile environment”, “influence of eluted material on cells” and “stability of measurement” necessary. As an example of a single-use pH electrode for cell culture, we introduce γ-ray sterilized pH electrode connectable to cell culture vessel. As a result, the performance of this electrode, in cell culture for 2 weeks or more, was pH control within 0.1 pH of the culture solution. We will continue to respond to requests for new analyzes from the field of regenerative medicine and contribute with measurement technology to the development of regenerative medicine. USEPA Stage 2 Disinfection By-product Rule Compliance Monitoring with the Aqualog® from HORIBA
Author: Adam M. GILMORE; HORIBA Instruments Inc., Ph.D. -This application note describes the use of the Aqualog for monitoring regulated Dissolved Organic Matter (DOM) and disinfection by-product issues for drinking water treatment. The Aqualog was used to simultaneously measure the UV-VIS absorbance spectrum and fluorescence Excitation Emission Matrix (EEM) and monitor DOM pertaining to EPA Stage2 Disinfection By-product Rule (DBPR2) compliance in a typical surface water source drinking water treatment plant (defined as Subpart H). The method enabled near real-time monitoring of the EPA regulated parameters of Total Dissolved Organic Carbon (TOC), absorbance at 254 nm (UVA) and the Specific UV Absorbance (SUVA-TOC) as well as the Simulated Distribution System Trihalomethane (THM) Formation Potential (SDS-THMFP). The parameters were reported as a function of compliance rules associated with required % removals of TOC (as a function of alkalinity) and predicted maximum contaminant levels (MCL) of THMs. The single instrument method, which is compatible with continuous flow monitoring or grab sampling, provides a rapid (2-3 minute) and precise indicator of drinking water disinfectant treatability without the need for separate UV photometric and TOC meter measurements or independent THM determinations.SUVA=100×UVA(cm-1)/TOC(mg/L) *9: SDS-THMFP: Simulated Distribution System Trihalomethane(THM)FormationPotential Note: Full paper will be downloaded from Readout No.48Japanese edition.
