Commitment to Net Zero

Since its incorporation HORIBA has provided solutions to positively impact the environment. Many of HORIBA's products and services help ensure a sustainable future with many of the products used in environmental applications. Examples include components used in the equipment that manufactures photovoltaic “solar” cells, environmental analysers which are used to determine air quality, automotive products which help manufacturers improve the environmental performance of their vehicles, and more recently our development of products to support the testing of hydrogen fuel cells.

HORIBA UK's environmental management system is certified to ISO 14001 and this certification has been held since 2003.

HORIBA UK is committed to achieving Net Zero by 2040.

Baseline Emissions

HORIBA UK uses its 2021 figures as the baseline emissions footprint. However, it should be noted that as our operations expands, essential travel returns to pre-pandemic levels, and the scope of our emissions monitoring widens, our data may indicate small short-term rises.

Emissions Reduction Targets

HORIBA UK has monitored emissions for many years. Our recording processes cover scope 1, scope 2 and some scope 3 emissions including but not limited to waste, air travel, grey fleet mileage.

A detailed road map, including science based target milestones for staged carbon reductions, is being developed by HORIBA UK to ensure that our end goal of Net Zero by 2040 is achieved.

In some cases, and with planned growth throughout 2024 & 2025, reductions may not be possible. For example, HORIBA UK's customers often require service level agreements where attendance is essential. Therefore, our service network results in business travel being responsible for a significant part of the organisation's carbon footprint.

In these cases, reductions shall be made to achieve the lowest emission so far as is reasonably practicable. Offsetting activities will be implemented to address the residual emissions. These activities shall be agreed by the HUK Executive Team following consultation with HUK's Environmental Awareness Team, which consists of volunteer employees who have a passion for environmental matters.

Carbon Reduction Projects

HORIBA UK has undertaken a number of activities and projects in recent years including;

  • Lighting Upgrades.
  • The introduction mandatory environmental awareness training for all employees.
  • Installation of electric vehicle charging points.
  • 100% Renewable Energy Contracts for our utilities.
  • Remote support service agreements (where reasonably practicable).
  • Introduction of permanent hybrid working following the Covid pandemic (significant commuting reduction).

HORIBA UK aims to implement further measures throughout the duration of the carbon reduction plan including;

  • Further building efficiency improvements including air conditioning upgrades, insulation upgrades, smart power switches and improved IT systems to support further reductions in the need for travel.
  • Continued employee education and awareness.
  • Eco-driver training.
  • Further analyse our scope 3 emissions (including upstream, downstream and product lifecycle elements).
  • Continual investment in, and development of technologies and products that support others in meeting their environmental goals and responsibilities.
  • Engage in offsetting schemes which support a range of UN Sustainable Development Goals.
