Metals, glass, battery electrodes, semiconductor materials developed for advanced applications (i.e. phone, cars, aluminum packaging, hard disks, photovoltaic cells, lithium batteries) involve coatings, or are made from a stack of layers requiring a careful characterization to determine elemental composition, identify possible diffusion of elements within layers, measure the thickness of each coating/layer.
