This study uses the IN VIVO RAMAN ANALYZER RZ-660 to track Retinol penetration into human skin over time. Raman depth and imaging maps reveal diffusion through epidermal layers and changes in hydration, providing quantitative evidence to support moisturizing and anti-aging cosmetic claims.

This application note demonstrates how the IN VIVO RAMAN ANALYZER RZ-660 enables precise, non-invasive evaluation of Retinol penetration in human skin for cosmetic efficacy assessment. Raman depth measurements were performed from –20 µm to 100 µm at multiple time points (1h, 2h, 4h) after application of a Retinol essence lotion. Characteristic Raman bands allow clear differentiation between skin and Retinol, enabling visualization of diffusion through the stratum corneum and into deeper epidermal layers. 2D and 3D Raman imaging also provide hydration mapping, offering quantitative insights into skin structure, barrier function, and product performance. This combined analytical and imaging approach supports claims such as moisturizing, anti-aging, and brightening while delivering strong scientific and marketing evidence.
