Biopharmaceutical Industry

Biopharmaceutical scientists need a portfolio of trusted and novel analytical tools to deliver safe, targeted, and effective cell derived therapeutics.

HORIBA Scientific offers the most comprehensive suite of available non-chromatographic tools, reducing the endless recurring cost of columns, mobile phases, and standards. Optical instrumentation is information rich, molecularly specific, inexpensive to run, and helps researchers characterize samples in R&D and confirm quality during manufacturing.

Optical Instrumentation

Our robust tools transition from QbD to PAT applications, and can be used for upstream and downstream QA/QC, near, at, and in-line:

This set of orthogonal tools can characterize individual particles (with NTA  ― Nanoparticle Tracking Analysis), and queries bulk attributes with DLS, Raman, Micro-XRF and A-TEEM™. Unusual for optical techniques, NTA and A-TEEM are particularly well suited to characterizing low concentration samples, providing unique capabilities for applications as diverse as vaccine release testing and basic research for exosomes characterization. Raman and A-TEEM deliver low-cost validatable results for applications that include protein aggregation and cell culture media QA/QC.

Biopharma Applications

Assessing Biotherapeutics Stability using Raman Spectroscopy

Raman Analysis of lysozyme

We have measured solutions of lysozyme under conditions known to effect its physical state in order to investigate the potential of Raman spectroscopy as a non-invasive and label-free tool to assess protein formulation stability.

Monitoring Cell Culture Media Variability using A-TEEM

Monitoring Cell Culture Media Variability using A-TEEM Spectroscopy

Cell culture media for bioreactors are usually prepared as an aqueous solution and provide everything a cell line needs for optimal growth as well as product yield and quality. Even subtle variations in composition could have a noticeable impact on the growth rate of the cell culture and its yield. Thus identifying and analyzing cell culture media is important.

Holistic Analysis of Mammalian Cell Proliferation using Fluorescence Spectroscopy

Holistic Analysis of Mammalian Cell Proliferation using Fluorescence Spectroscopy

Monitoring culture media conditions is highly important for industries in order to improve cell proliferation for applications such as regenerative medicines and protein synthesis.

Insulin Structure and Stability Assessment

Multivariate analysis of different insulin proteins

Stability and aggregation of insulin are studied using simultaneous fluorescence excitation emission matrices (EEMs) and UV-Vis absorbance spectroscopy [1]. Insulin is a protein-hormone, produced by the pancreas and is necessary for basic metabolic processes. The different types of commercial insulin therapeutics generally fall into two categories: short-acting and long-acting insulin.
