Applications

Petroleum Catalyst Carbon and Sulfur Determination with the EMIA-Series

For petroleum refining catalysts, such as hydrocracking and hydrodesulfurization catalysts, precise carbon measurement is essential to maximize operational efficiency.

Most petroleum catalysts consist of transition metals such as Platinum (Pt), Nickel (Ni), Molybdenum (Mo), Rhenium (Re), and Cobalt (Co) supported on inert substrates such as alumina or silica. During operation, carbon (coke) deposits accumulate on the catalyst surface, reducing catalyst activity. The changes in carbon and sulfur content in catalysts before (fresh/regenerated) and after the usage (deactivated) is very important to determine the efficiency and performance of the catalyst. Therefore, it is critical to monitor carbon content throughout the operational states.
