Phosphates, nitrates and potash are common parts of most fertilizers, containing the three main elements needed for plant growth. Size and shape information can help determine the speed at which these nutrients can break down, how homogonous the mixture is and many other qualities. In this application note, a mixture of diammonium phosphate and monoammonium phosphate was tested on the Analysette 28, a dynamic image analyzer.

Fracking is a technique where liquids and a proppant is pushed into a drilled cavity. The high pressure fractures the rock, which releases oil and natural gas. Proppants keep the rock open and allow flow of these materials out of the rock for collection and processing. A common proppant is sand, which is carefully taken and processed to ensure purity as well as correct shape and size. The Analysette 28 is a dynamic image analyzer, which takes pictures to measure particle size and shape.

In this application note, we used the SZ-100V2 to evaluate the stability of LUDOX® TM-50, a colloidal silica slurry. Two samples were analyzed: one from a newly opened bottle ("Fresh LUDOX®") and one from a bottle that had been opened and stored for over a year ("Aged LUDOX®"). By measuring and comparing the zeta potential and particle size of these samples, we demonstrate how the SZ-100V2 can effectively monitor the stability of colloidal silica.

Dynamic light scattering is usually the only particle sizing technique that can size particles that small, but the absolute lower limits of the technique is often not probed. In this application note, the SZ-100V2 was used to measure sucrose solutions and allulose solutions to investigate the lower size limit of the instrument using the Nano Analysis Mode.

The ability to measure nanoparticles down to 10 nm is becoming more and more important to numerous fields as processes and products become more refined and demand for higher resolution particle size distribution data increases. In this application note, the ViewSizer 3000 was used to measure 10 nm silver nanoparticles confirmed by sizing from transmission electron microscope (TEM) images.

In this application note, a ~26 nm nanogold sample was measured with two different setups of detector angle and detector position using the SZ-100V2 nanoparticle analyzer. One setup was with the 90° detector and cell center position, and the other setup was with the 173° detector and cell wall position. A feasibility study to measure low specific surface areas with the SA-9600 Series was performed using Certified Reference Materials BCR 169, 170 and 172 from the European Commission Joint Research Centre. Manipulating the surface charge of suspended particles significantly improves wastewater treatment efficiency. Lowering the magnitude of surface charge allows particles to aggregate. This is often achieved by adding inorganic coagulants and polymeric flocculants. Zeta potential measurements with the SZ-100 determine the effect of different coagulants and concentrations.

Suspended solids are a common impurity in wastewater from industrial and mining operations. In order to meet requirements for water clarity for reuse or discharge, the suspended solids are often allowed to settle to the bottom or float (cream) to the top of large tanks. The duration of these processes is a strong function of the particle size, e.g. larger particles settle/cream faster.

Using the SZ-100 Nanoparticle Analyzer, the concentration of additive needed to reduce the zeta potential of wastewater suspended solids to zero can be reliably evaluated and so the efficiency of different additives can be readily compared. In this note, the effect of coagulant choice and concentration on the treatment of suspended clays is analyzed.

Dynamic light scattering (DLS) results are often expressed in terms of the Z-average. The Z-average arises when DLS data is analyzed by the use of the technique of cumulants. Since the calculation of the Z-average is mathematically stable, the Z-average result is insensitive to noise. And that makes it a preferred DLS size parameter.
