Investigating Polydispersity Limits with Multi-Variable Pulse Nanoparticle Tracking Analysis

The ability to measure a sample across a broad range of sizes can be challenging for NTA instruments in general. Small size particles need high energy excitation due to the rapidly weakening decay in Mie scattering below 100 nm, while large size particles need low energy excitation to avoid excessive laser diffraction intensity that leads to camera saturation. Varying energies are needed and to better visualize and track the particles.

The ViewSizer 1000 helps address this by using the multi-variable pulse technique, which uses a high energy blue laser, but adjusts the pulse duration to deliver high, medium, and low energy laser scattering to size the small, medium, and large size particles, respectively.

In this application note, a mix of 50 nm and 1 μm PSL standards were created to investigate the ability of the ViewSizer 1000 Nanoparticle Tracking Analyzer to measure across a wide range of sizes.
