Greetings from your friends at HORIBA Instruments!

Dispersion Technology is the premier manufacturer of instruments for particle characterization of suspensions and emulsions using acoustic spectroscopy. HORIBA Instruments is the exclusive representative for Dispersion Technology in North America. This electronic newsletter focuses on using acoustics and electroacoustics to solve formulation challenges.

Formulation Stability

Many formulators are faced with the challenge of how to optimize the chemistry of a suspension in order to maximize stability and shelf life. Measuring particle size and zeta potential while altering the surface chemistry has a proven track record of success in improving dispersion stability. This approach is used in the pharmaceutical, chemical, ceramics and other industries. The Dispersion Technology DT-1201 can measure particle size, zeta potential, pH, conductivity, temperature and other important parameters without dilution. The optional automatic titration package makes otherwise complex formulation studies easy enough for anyone to perform.

pH vs Zeta Potential

Zeta Potential

Zeta potential is an indicator of dispersion stability used in many industries. This is a measure of the charge near the surface of a particle. When the surface chemistry of a suspension or emulsion is optimized and the zeta potential is greater than around plus or minus 30 mV, the particles should stabilize and avoid aggregation, sedimentation or phase separation. The DT-300 zeta potential analyzer measures any sample without dilution. Just dip the zeta potential probe into any suspension (polar or non-polar) and generate meaningful data in seconds.

Emulsion Stability

Most emulsions require a surfactant to stabilize an emulsion. The choice of surfactant and the optimum concentration can be investigated by measuring the particle size and zeta potential of different formulations. Since the DT-1201 measures both particle size and zeta potential without dilution, this has proven to a valuable tool for emulsion stability investigations.

New LA Series Customer Training Courses

The date is set for our Fall LA series training courses!

Plan on joining us on November 6 & 7. This course is intended for existing LA-300, LA-910, LA-920, LA-930, and LA-950 customers. We have restructured both the content and format to focus on method development, data interpretation and software features.  Morning lectures will be followed by afternoon hands-on sessions in our Irvine, CA applications lab.
