Particle Characterization
Greetings from your friends at HORIBA Instruments!
Our June newsletter welcomes you to attend our open house in the beautiful, new HORIBA office in Santa Clara, CA, visit our new Polymers web page and download the following new new technical support documents: the new Polymers Application Note, the new Catalyst Application Note and a Technical Note about laser diffraction verification.
Particle Size Analysis Open House in Santa Clara
HORIBA Instruments is hosting an open house featuring a live particle characterization study on Thursday, July 17 at our office in Santa Clara, CA. The live study will demonstrate measurements made for various samples on the following particle characterization analyzers: LA-950 laser diffraction analyzer, CAMSIZER dynamic image analysis system, PSA300 static image analysis system, DT-1200 acoustic spectrometer, and LB-550 dynamic light scattering analyzer. Regular talks during the day will explain the various instruments used and present data collected during the study.
Particle Characterization of Polymers
Polymers are large molecules made from repeating structural units connected by covalent chemical bonds. Many polymer products exist in the particulate state and require size and sometimes shape characterization. Due to the wide range of sizes, all of the HORIBA particle characterization technologies can be used for polymer samples depending on the application. Laser diffraction is used to measure powders and suspensions from 0.01 – 3000 µm, dynamic light scattering measures suspensions from 1 nm – 6 µm and dynamic image analysis covers 30 µm to 30 mm.

Verifying Laser Diffraction Analyzers
Since laser diffraction systems are based on first principles they are not calibrated - but should undergo regular verification testing. Systems sold into the pharmaceutical industry typically experience a structured installation and operation qualification (IQ/OQ) procedure that includes rigorous verification testing. The verification tests used in the OQ match the tests performed at both the factory in Japan and Quality Assurance Lab in Irvine, CA prior to customer delivery. The HORIBA Technical Note 151 explains the selection of standards used for OQ testing and comments on the efficacy of practices seen in customer labs as they verify their own instruments.

Size and Shape Analysis of Catalysts
Hydro-treating catalysts come in many sizes and shapes depending on the applications and manufacturer. The size and shape of the catalyst pieces are important specifications that require quantification. Common shapes include spheres, pellets, cylinders and 3 or 4 lobe (trilobe and quadralobe) shaped pieces. Older, manual and subjective techniques such as sieves and calipers are being replaced by dynamic image analysis using the CAMSIZER. The CAMSIZER provides quick, accurate definitions of all physical dimensions important to catalyst manufacturers and end users.

Upcoming Customer Training Courses
The HORIBA particle size analysis group has been steadily expanding our offering of customer training courses. Our first CAMSIZER training course was held in Houston on May 20 -21, 2008. The first laser diffraction training course on the east coast took place on April 22 -23, 2008, at our office in Edison, NJ. The next laser diffraction training courses will be held in Irvine, CA October 21 -22, and in Edison, NJ November 5-6.
